Recipies that I have tried: sneak it to them broccoli soup, excellent and easy to make and the minestroni soup. People wanted the recipe. I do think this cookbook should be a staple in any family library.

I enjoy books about Disney and normally don't judge them harshly.

But people should be warned about this one. In just the first couple dozen pages, there are numerous items that are out of date. It's kind of sad that families will go searching for the old-fashioned phone in the General Store, will go to awaken Tinker Bell in the Fantasyland shop, will go to see Tink in the keyhole of the sewing table there, the wooden leg on the lost and found shelf at the Frontierland station -- when all of these features have been removed over a year ago. In addition to being outdated, the information is sometimes just wrong. For instance, it isn't true that "WDW imagineers could not dig a basement in Orlando as they did at Disneyland in California ..." There are no utilidors in Disneyland. (Walt was frustrated to see a cowboy walking through Tomorrowland on his way to work in Frontierland in Disneyland -- since there was no other way to cross the park. And the idea for the WDW ultidors was born!)

If I can spot things that are wrong, I wonder what a real Disney expert would find. The editing was skethcy, too. For instance, the red and green faces of Cinderella's evil stepsisters are "belying" their anger and jealousy. "Belying" means hiding or contracting. What the author meant was "revealing."

Unfortunately, this book is a regurgitation of all the "WDW Secrets" lists on the Internet. Some of the items on those list aren't legitimate. For instance, the three-circled cut-out shapes in the stone wall that curves along the walkways to the front of the castle - at no time of day do they cast a Mickey-shaped shadow on the ground. I read about this online a couple of years ago and went on many occasions to the castle to see the shadows. I kept coming back to check. I asked castmembers. It doesn't happen.

In preparation for my 5th trip to the Magic Kingdom I bought this book looking for "600 secrets" that I could discover within the parks. The book didn't deliver on that promise. In truth there might be 20-25 "secrets" or "items of interest" that I plan to look for during my trip. The rest of the pieces of information aren't secrets as much as interesting facts, history, and trivia. However, I didn't find myself disappointed. Perhaps it is the excitement and anticipation of the trip, but I found the book to be a fun and enjoyable read that walked you through each park with enough details to help you picture what you would be looking at. For me it was certainly worth the price I paid.
So, don't buy the book for the "600 secrets." They aren't there. However, if you are a Disney World fan, do buy the book for an enjoyable, descriptive, and informative walk through a very magical place. 5 days and counting!!

What to Pack for Rainy Days at Disney World

Last week at Disney World we rain, rain, and rain even more. Disney Theme Parks to visit in the middle of the rain is the best way to overcome the public and the hot Florida. Many Cast Members and love to visit a local Orlando Theme Park for the rainy season because the park is less dense and far more cool. To make the most for a rainy day at Disney World, here are our suggestions on what to park in it looks like rain forcast for yourholiday.

1. Ponco - Forget the umbrellas and buy ponco from your local walgreens, Target or Walmart stores. Ponchos allows you to be hands free and actually protect you from the rain. Full of light from light rain, you can still run around the park and rides straight hit.

2. Small hand towel - you will get wet, this will attract some small towels to dry quickly after rain. You can dry quickly and still have fun in the park.

3. WaterShoes - Most people forget to wear comfortable shoes water during the rainy season in Disney World. Our favorite shoes or Tevas Water Reef Sandels. They may be exposed to water, but do not fall when walking down a wet road. These shoes have a strap around the heel, making it easy to walk around, even wet.

4. Baseball Hat - Required with a large baseball cap to help keep your face dry. You can wear a baseball cap and then you ponco on the caps. This directly out of your poncoface and dry your face.

5. Large ziplock bag - when you wet ponchos, store them away in a ziplock bag until needed again. This stuff makes you dry, while the Disney Theme Parks around.

Always check the weather forcast before you go to Disney World vacation, being prepared is one way to ensure you have a lovely holiday even in the rain.

Found this in the library. As a retired school teacher it would have been a fantastic resource for the classroom. I am ordering it for my two daughters who teach school, for one who doesn't but loves to do projects with my grandson, and recommending it to all my teacher and young mother friends. Easy to follow directions and pictures, easy to obtain supplies, and many are quick projects producing great results.

One of the most personal, meaningful efforts ever produced by the Walt Disney Studios was not an animated movie for the masses, a big box office live action adventure, or even a theme park. It was the work they provided for the soldiers, sailors, and airmen of World War II. The studio animators under Walt's direction provided free of charge the design of over 1,000 original artistic logos for the armed forces. These were used on individual planes, tanks, and ships for their crews. They also helped design unit insignias for organized armoured units, air wings and squadrons, infantry units and others. These requests were sometimes funneled through the official military channels, but more often came in a letter sent from overseas signed by a bunch of American young men. Most often the boys would send in a rough sketch of what they had in mind, or asked to use a certain animated character they favored. Other times they let the studio come up with whatever they wanted, and the artists often created new characters on the spot. No request was too big or too small, the animators completed every job. These designs were incredible and inspiring works of art, not something dashed off in a hurry.

This effort began when early one morning a fews days after the bombing of Pearl Harbour, the phone rang at Walt Disney's house. The Studio called to tell him that 700 army troops had set up camp at the Walt Disney studio campus, in order to protect the nearby airfield. The long war hurt the Disney company many way, including the loss of key staff to the armed forces, reduction in commercial output and attendance, and cuts in overseas theatrical releases of their films. Despite these issues that could have caused resentment of the wars interference in Disney growth and success, the company dove in to do their part to support the war effort.

Whether it was in producing great war time comedy animated shorts such as "Der Fuhreres Face" to keep up the public morale; or educational films to teach soldiers how to operate a certain weapon or avoid disease; or deeply researched theory films like "Victory Through Airpower"; or animated shorts that promoted war bonds... the studio worked overtime to do their part. The logos and unit insignia are a big part of that effort.

The beautiful color photos reproduce the actual designs in page after page of color photos. A wonderful book for the Disneyphile, OR for those that are just interested in high quality unit design artwork from planes, etc. from WWII.

Also see the book "Donald Duck Joins Up: The Walt Disney Studio During World War II (Studies in Cinema)" to get a more complete picture of all the other combined efforts of the studio during the war, including the logos in this book. Family Fun really does have one of the best databases of innovative and fun crafts for kids around. As an arts director at a girl scout camp, I read a lot of these books and this is one of the better ones. All the crafts in this book feature color photographs, and almost all leave lots of room for young crafters to use their own creativity (rather than blindly following instructions.) Most supplies used are things that can be cheaply procured/ that you probably have already-- lots use recycled objects(milk jugs, egg cartons) and a lot use paper, yarn and other inexpensive supplies. There are crafts for varied age and skill levels, and a lot can be adapted to differing age and skill levels.

The only downside to this book is that virtually every craft is also available on the familyfun website, but there is something to be said for having all 500 projects at the tips of your fingertips-- my niece and nephew are often inspired simply by leafing through the pages. Also, the directions in here are frequently more extensive than the ones listed online, and are better organized.

It's a fun book to read and probably a great companion to one's first visit to WDW. However, when you've been there over and over, the magic it reveals is not that secret at all. Many times I ended reading a topic feeling nothing had been added to what I already knew. For example, the "utilidors" at the Magic Kingdom are not really a secret. And why Cinderella Castle does not have any beacons for airplanes ? Well, imagineers intentionally not made it high enough. Guess that figures.
And at times I thought I was really going to learn something new, the author dared me to find out myself or wrote that she wasn't going to give away this particular secret ;-)

Fun to relive the Magic though...
